Growing up under the warm glow of Southern California skies, my allegiance to the Los Angeles Lakers was as inevitable as the setting sun. Through the many highs of championship glory to the absolutely gut-wrenching lows of losing seasons, my support for the team has never skipped a beat. This season, the Lakers find themselves in a familiar predicament that they've had for the past 4 seasons. Currently, they are hovering in the mid-tier of the Western Conference with a playoff berth very within reach. With a current record of 31-28, they're just above .500, and there's a sense every time you watch them that they must kick into a higher gear if they want a chance in the postseason.
This year, perhaps more than ever, the spotlight shines on Lebron James. In the twilight years of his dreamlike career and the final year of his contract with the Lakers, every game feels like a part of the end of his legacy. Within the next 3 games, James is predicted to achieve the feat of 40,000 career points, something we'll likely never see again in the NBA. Yet, despite his amazing stats in his 20th career year, the Lakers need other players to step up. Beyond the starting lineup, the bench's contribution has been underwhelming, with no bench player averaging more than 9 points a game. This glaring gap in depth illustrates a pivotal area for improvement, that must be tightened up if we want a real chance come playoff time.
While the idea of making coaching hires late in the season typically doesn't spur my interest, the current circumstances might be an exception. For the Lakers to reignite themselves and push for a playoff spot, a new source of inspiration could be huge. This could mean considering a change at HC, even if it involves parting ways with coach Darvin Ham. I think Ham has been overrated since beginning his time with the team, and a new coach could help improve the lacking offense the Lakers currently have. I know Lebron won't be here forever, but to cement his legacy as the best player of all time, one more win is all Lebron needs. And I want that win to come with the Lakers.
